The English translation of Sully's Mémoires was first published in 1756. This translation is taken from the edition of L'Écluse des Loges, first published with the fictitious imprint 'Londres, 1745'. The dedication is signed by the translator Charlotte Lennox, but the translation is also attributed to her friend Samuel Johnson. See A.T. Hazen, Samuel Johnson's prefaces & dedications (New Haven 1937), pp. 110--116. The two portrait plates in vol. I are a frontispiece portrait of Henri IV and a portrait of Sully after Rubens facing the dedication to Thomas Holles-Pelham, Duke of Newcastle. The folded engraved map of France is signed 'T. Kitchin'. Volumes I and III have half-titles. Page 202 in vol. VI is misnumbered '122'. ESTC n21986.
Copy Notes Volume I is inscribed in ink on the front free-endpaper John Soane / 1797 and in pencil in another hand 6 vol. 18s/-.
