Johnson's Dictionary was first published in 1755 (2nd ed., 1755--56, q.v.). This is the first London quarto edition, the first edition of the Dictionary to be published after his death on 13 December 1784, and the first to have Johnson's portrait. The text derives from the two-volume folio fourth edition and includes the original preface, the other prefatory material as noted on the title-page, and the 'Advertisement' to the fourth edition. The engraved frontispiece portrait in vol. I is by J. Cook: 'From a Painting by Sir Joshua Reynolds, in the Possession of B. Langton Esqr. Published as the Act directs August 21st 1786, by J. Longman in Paternoster Row'. Signatures: vol. I: [a]4(-a1?) b4 c-h2 i-k4, 2g-h4 B-6U4 6X4(-6X4); vol. II: [A]2(-A2) B-3Y4 3Z2, 2A-3Y4 23Z2. The Soane copy as described is without the half-title found in some copies. ESTC questions whether this edition was published in 84 parts. ESTC n18; Alston V 186; Fleeman 55.4D/8

The top right corner of each free-endpaper has been clipped to remove previous ownership marks which can just be traced in vol. II. With Boone's price and codes in pencil on vol. I front free-endpaper.
Binding C18th sprinkled calf, gilt roll-tooled spines, red and green morocco spine-labels.
