In fact the dramatic works only. Sir Thomas Hanmer's edition of 1743--44, revised by Thomas Hawkins, with additional notes by Bishop Percy, Mr. Warton, and John Hawkins, and 'Various Readings Of Mr Theobald And Mr Capell' at end of each volume. The general title-page as above, dated 1771, is in vol. I only; vols II--VI have the title: The works of Mr William Shakespear. Volume the ..., dated 1770 and the latter title appears also in vol. I as an added title-page at the end of the preliminaries. The plates include the Chandos portrait, the Stratford bust (as altered for Pope's edition) and the Westminster monument, also an engraving to each play, by H. Gravelot after Francis Hayman; engraved tail-pieces also by Gravelot. With a glossary at the end of vol. VI. ESTC t138857; Alston III.81.

Copy Notes Inscribed in pencil on front free-endpaper: 6 vols. 5.5.0. Volumes II--VI are partly unopened.

Binding C18th half calf, marbled-paper boards, gilt double-ruled spines, red morocco spine-labels.
