Title-page printed in red and black with engraved vignette. André's Essai was first published in 1741. In his introductory 'Discourse' the editor, Jean-Henri Formey, strongly recommends on p. CXXIX the second edition of Laugier's Essai sur l'architecture, 1755, of which he published a review in 1756 (see W. Herrmann, Laugier and eighteenth-century French theory, London 1985, p. 256); this particular passage was marked by Soane with a marginal notation in pencil.
Copy Notes Imperfect; wanting the half-title. Bought at the sale of the late architect and antiquary James Cavanah Murphy (1716--1814) for 2s. on 18 December 1814 with other books and prints to the value of £27, paid by draft dated 19 December. (Spiers Box, Miscellaneous booksellers). Inscribed in ink on the front free-endpaper John Soane. Occasional marginal marks of emphasis in pencil and translation notes in ink.
Binding C18th sprinkled calf, gilt-tooled spine, red morocco spine-label.
