[Gli antichi sepolcri. 1768]

In Roma (Place), 1768.

The first edition had appeared in 1697, and a second, slightly enlarged edition in 1699. Soane's use of 'star-fish' ceilings, beginning with his Breakfast Room at 12 Lincoln's Inn Fields built in 1792, seems to have been inspired by Bartoli's plates of the ceilings of Etruscan tombs. See Peter Thornton and Helen Dorey, A miscellany of objects from Sir John Soane's Museum (London 1992), p. 92. BAL, Early printed books, no. 210.
