First published in Latin in 1586. Richard Gough's edition was first published in 1789. His work on this second edition extended only to the first volume. According to the preface of vol. I he withdrew because of ill health; subsequent volumes were edited by John Nichols. Page xlii in volume I is numbered 'xlii--xlviii'. The facsimile engraving of Camden's handwriting is present as a plate facing p. xxx in vol. I rather than as an illustration printed on that page (as incorrectly called for by the list of plates at the end of the volume). This list also gives incorrect page references for the location of plates ii--iii and ix in vol. I (they should be bound facing pp.68 & 149 respectively). Page 263 in vol. II is a folded letterpress sheet showing the 'Pedigree of Oliver Cromwell.'
Copy Notes Imperfect; volume I wanting the map of Devonshire. In this copy the plates in vol. II are bound out of numerical sequence and vol. III contains a map of Monmouthshire (p. 164) not called for in the list of plates. With sig. 4T in vol. III (pp.345--348) misbound after sig. 4U. Almost all the text of this misbound signature is also supplied in four leaves of manuscript (watermark dated '1828') inserted at p. 344.
Three 'parts' of this work were bought on Soane's behalf by 'Ch. Malton' from E. Macklen for £3 16s. 6d. on 26 August 1806. (Archive 7/3/136, 16/12/33, and Jnl 5, p.72; see also undated list of books in Soane's hand attached to a sheet endorsed 'Oct: 30: 1805 / Books of Mr. M. ...', Spiers Box, Misc. Booksellers). A bill from the bookseller Robert Scholey dated 25 July 1806 notes 'Goffs Britannia Pt.4 Not out'. (Archive 16/12/34).
Binding C19th diced calf, front pastedown endpapers watermarked '1827', gilt roll-tool borders, black morocco spine-labels, spines misdated '1816' (for 1806?). Bound by Edwin Hutchinson for £3 12s., 8 July 1829 (vols I--III) and 14s. (vol. IV), 23 July 1829. (Archive 7/10/21).
Reference Number 1836
Additional Names Hutchinson, Edwin; Nichols, John (1745--1826); Malton, Charles; Gough, Richard (1735--1809); Macklen, E.
