Lugt 7240; Fredericksen, Index of paintings, II, p. 27, sale no. 493. The final leaf is blank. The two anonymous consigners indicated by the auctioneer have been identified by Fredericksen as Sir John Leicester (lots 39--52) and Thomas Barnard, Bishop of Limerick (formerly Dean of Derry) (lots 1--38). However it should be noted that these lots include 'a few Pictures belonging to a Private Gentleman,' added indiscriminately by the auctioneer 'to render the Sale more extensive' (see 'Advertisement.', p. [4]). Sir John Leicester's reason for selling paintings 'purchased for his Father Sixty Years ago, in Italy' is said by the auctioneer to be because he 'is a Collector and liberal Patron of the Arts of the present day' (p. [4]). Thomas Barnard's death was reported in The Gentleman's Magazine LXXVI, p. 588 on 7 June 1806 but there is an entry in Hester Thrale's Thraliana dated 'May 1806' when she composed a ditty on his demise beginning 'Has then the Dean of Derry: / Past o'er the darksome Ferry? / Who once more bright / Than Torch by Night / Shone forth among Wits so merry!', published in St. James's' Chronicle.
