Pages 276-7 misnumbered 216-7. The first leaf of the initial gathering is an engraved frontispiece incorporating a variant title ('Religio Castrametatio Disciplina Militaris et Balneae Veterum Romanorum') and imprint dated 1685. Latin dedication signed by Jan and Gilles Jansson and dated Amsterdam, 8 September 1685. The text, illustrated by engraved copies of the original woodcuts, is a translation of Du Choul's Discours de la religion des anciens Romains and Discours sur la castrametation et discipline militaire des Romains, first published in Lyons in 1556 and 1555 respectively.
Copy Notes Front free-endpaper inscribed in ink John Soane / 1809. Bought from Thomas Boone for 2s. 6d. on 20 December 1809 (Spiers Box). With Boone's price and bookseller's codes inscribed in pencil on front free-endpaper.
Binding Late C17th or early C18th sprinkled calf, blind-ruled borders with blind-tooled spine border and vertical line, blind-ruled spine compartments, vellum spine-label lettered in ink 'Du. Choul/ Vet. Rom:/ Religio &c.'.
