FLAXMAN,, John (1755—1826)
Lectures on sculpture. By John Flaxman, Esq. R.A. ... As delivered by him before the president and members of the Royal Academy. With a brief memoir of the author.
London (Place), John Murray,, 1829.
xxvii, [1], 243 [i.e. 343], [1] p., litho. frontis. port., 52 [i.e. 51] litho. pl. ; 24.3 cm. (8°)
Flaxman was professor of sculpture at the Royal Academy from 1810 until his death, and a close friend of Soane. The present copy of his Lectures, like the BAL copy, has the frontispiece portrait of Flaxman printed on India paper and appears to have been issued without pl. 18; the BAL copy has an errata slip 'Plate 18 ... was never engraved.' The plates are later impressions of those eventually published by Henry Bohn in the 1838 edition, the lithographic printer, Hullmandel, having mistakenly printed them on demy rather than royal octavo paper. This plate is however included in the 1838 edition and may have been included in later issues of the present edition. BAL, Early printed books, no. 1074 and notes to no. 1075.
Binding C19th diced calf, gilt roll-tool borders, thick-thin gilt-ruled spine, maroon spine-label. Edwin Hutchinson was paid 3s. 6d. for binding in 'Calf Lettd Lines' on 2 July 1831. (Priv. Corr. XVI.E.7.16).
Reference Number 2271
Additional Names Hutchinson, Edwin; ROYAL ACADEMY OF ARTS, London
