The 'Avertissement' proposes that 'le frontispice montrera Venise personnifié et triomphante, prenant possession de la mer Adriatique' (p. III). This appears to correspond however to the 'Planche Première' depicting 'Le Doge Épousant La Mer, Ou Venise Triomphante', which forms a Byronic contrast to the final plate of 'Venise Abattue.' Except for the calligraphic title-plate the lithographs (two of which reproduce Titian's Assumption of the Virgin and Veronese's Holy Family) are printed on india paper in this copy. It is possible that Soane's espousal of lithography for the plates of interior views in the Description of his house and museum, was in part inspired by the atmospheric effects of the new medium evident in this highly romantic work.
