A Paris (Place), chez Pierre Emery. Michel Brunet. Et la veuve de Daniel Horthemels,, 1702.
[6], 117, [3] p., engr. frontis., [10] pl. (7 fold.) : engr. illus. ; 42.7 cm. (2°)

The first edition was published in 1650. For this new edition (probably the fifth), ten plates from drawings by Charles Errard were added illustrating details of the pedestal of Trajan's column. In addition shading has been added to the profiles of the orders according to the 'moderns'; there is a new allegorical frontispiece; and four of the 44 full-page engravings appear for the first time (printed on pp. 9, 36, 115 and 117). BAL, Early printed books, no. 1132.

Copy Notes Inscribed in ink on title-page Wm Chambers. Tipped in before the title-page is a note in pencil, almost certainly in Chambers's hand and copied out below in ink by Soane, making the unusual statement that Palladio's I quattro libri was a 'juvenile production' and that 'accurate measures' of profiles of the Basilica of Vicenza and other buildings by Palladio in the Vicentine, taken by the writer in 1755, show that in his buildings 'he altered and considerably improv[ed] upon his original Ideas' published in the Quattro libri. The verso of this note has a list of costs of 'Repairs' to 'Mewse', 'Queens palace' etc. apparently dated 'feb' 29t'. The library also has two manuscript copies of Fréart's Parallèle in French: an abridged octavo version inscribed on the verso of the title-leaf Hen Ware; and a folio version bought from T. and W. Boone for £1 4s. on 11 April 1823. (Priv. Corr. XVI.E.5.6).

Binding C18th mottled calf, blind triple-rule borders, gilt tooled spine, red morocco spine label.

Reference Number 2295

Additional Names Chambers, Sir William (1723--1796) - In verse; Errard, Charles (1606?--1689)
