First published in 1762 with subsequent editions appearing in 1763, 1765, 1769 (with additions) and 1774. The final leaf of vol. II contains the publishers' list of books written by Lord Kames, who was advised by his friend and compatriot Robert Adam in compiling the present work. Soane first encountered Kames's ideas as a student attending Thomas Sandby's lectures at the Royal Academy, but only acquired his own copy in March 1813 when he took over seventy pages of notes in preparation for his own lectures.
