The Dizionario is composed of material from Milizia's principal works Le vite de' piu celebri architetti (1768), Principi d'architettura (1785), Dell'arte di vedere nelle belle arti del disegno secondo i principi di Sulzer e Mengs (1781, enlarged edition, 1786), and Roma delle belle arti del disegno (1787); editions of all these are also present in Soane's library. Volume II has a final leaf dedicating the work posthumously to Don Diego d'Avalos, prince of Montesarchio.
Copy Notes Inscribed in ink on front paste-down endpaper J. Woods, probably the architect Joseph Woods (1776--1864), founder of the London Architectural Society, editor of vol. IV of Stuart and Revett's Antiquities of Athens (1816), and author of several books of his own.
Binding C19th Spanish-style mottled calf, gilt roll-tool borders, gilt triple-rule spine, red and green morocco spine-labels. Bound two volumes in one, uniform with the copy of Milizia's Roma delle belle arti del disegno, 1787 (q.v.).
