Title from etched title-plate. The plates are dated 1819 and 1820; plate 38 is hand-coloured. It is not known who compiled the accompanying text, which is in parallel English and French. Sir Henry Englefield was an important figure in the Society of Dilettanti; Soane bought the 'Englefield Vase', an Apulian amphora of the late 4th century B.C., at Christie's sale of the collection, 6--8 March 1823 (q.v.), lot 53 but this is not reproduced here. Copy Notes Bought from J. Williams for £1, April 1831. (Priv. Corr.XVI.E.7.17). Inscribed in pencil on front paste-down Published at 3 Guineas and with a bookseller's hieroglyph in pencil on the rear pastedown.
Binding C19th half calf, blind roll-tooled borders, gilt- and blind-tooled spine, red morocco spine-label, marbled-paper boards.
