NEWGATE, (Prison : London, England)
Newgate Calendar. October 29, 1800. (April 11, 1810; April 8, 1812; May 10, 1815.)
(4º)

Keepers of Newgate Prison were required to keep records of the prisoners in their custody, from the moment they were committed to await trial to the time they were discharged, either because they had been exonerated or in order to undergo their punishment. The Newgate Calendar's title was later adopted by publishers for accounts of notorious criminals, and from the middle of the 18th century for highly popular collected editions of such accounts such as The Newgate calendar; or, malefactors' bloody register, 5 vols, [1773?] (ESTC t188775). In 1781 Soane had made estimates and drawings at Newgate Gaol for his old friend and mentor George Dance while the latter was acting as surveyor to the City of London. Each Calendar has contents as follows: London commitments. -- Middlesex commitments. -- London prisoners upon orders. -- Middlesex prisoners upon orders. -- Court of King's Bench, Westminster. Prisoners upon orders. -- Session of the Peace, Middlesex. Prisoners upon orders. -- Session of the Peace, Westminster. Prisoners upon orders.
