Romae (Place), ex typographia Aloysii Zannetti,, 1596--1605.
3 vols ; 42.1 cm. (2°)
I: XV, [5], 12, 17--25, [1], 31--290, 299--353, 358--360, [2]; [4], 104 p., [4] engr. double-page pl. : engr. t.-p., [1] full-page engr. illus., wdcut illus.
II: [20], 88, 145--354, 359--418, 423--655, [1] p., [17] pl. (9 fold.) : engr. t.-p., [7] engr. illus. (1 full-page), wdcut illus.
III: XVI, 68, 73--314, 319--378, 383--424, 433--500, 503--529, [1], 551--598, 569--573, [1] p., [4] pl. (3 double-page), [8] letterpress tables (4 fold.) : engr. t.-p., [14] full-page letterpress tables, woodcut illus. and diagrams
Each volume has a different allegorical engraved title-page, that to vol. I reading as above; that to vol. II 'De Postrema Ezechielis Prophetae Visione Ioannis Baptistae Villalpandi Cordvbensis E Societate Iesv Tomi Secvndi Explanationvm Pars Secvnda ...'; and that to vol. III 'Tomi III Apparatvs Vrbis Ac Templi Hierosolymitiani Pars I Et II Ioannis Baptistae Villalpandi Cordvbensis E Societate Iesv Collato Stvdio Cvm H Prado Ex Eadem Societate'. The first part of vol. II is bound and collated at the end of vol. I, with a divisional letterpress title and colophon dated 'MDCIIV' including the 'Regestvm Tomi Primi' and '... Secvndi Primae Partis'. The imprint of volume I as recorded above is taken from the colophon leaf; the title-page imprints of volumes II and III read 'Romae ... Typis Illefonsi Ciacconii excudebat. Carolus Vulliettus Anno Domini MDCIIII.' However, the colophon in the latter is dated 'MDCII', and in the former 'MDCV. à qua die tres simul tomi incipient euulgari.', suggesting that the second part of vol. II was the last to be printed. The hiatuses in the pagination of all three volumes reflect the binding position of the plates. These generally bear the appropriate page number, except for the sequence of [14] large plates (including one with two copperplate impressions) which is bound in the hiatus between pp. 88 and 145 in vol. II part 2 (this sequence is listed as figures I--XV on p. 88 of that volume). See BAL 4135 for a detailed description. The work was begun by the architects Hierónimo Prado and Juan Bautista Vallalpando and completed by the latter after Prado's death in 1595; its printing, already complicated by the extent and detail of text and plates, was further delayed by an inquisitorial commission called to examine its theological orthodoxy. Volumes I and II contain commentaries on Ezekiel's vision of a temple (Ezekiel 40--47), identified with the Temple of Solomon at Jerusalem, by Pradus and Villalpando respectively and Villalpando's reconstruction of the Temple seen as the archetype and ultimate source of the theory and rules of architecture, and vol. III contains Villalpandus's detailed history of the city of Jerusalem (part 1) and an exhaustive mathematical investigation of the Hebrew units of measurement (part 2). BAL, Early printed books, no. 4135.
