QUATREMÈRE DE QUINCY, Antoine Chrysosthôme (1755--1849)

Egyptian architecture and its influence on Greece was the subject of a competition set in 1785 by the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres and won with this 'Dissertation' by Quatremère de Quincy. Soane made a partial translation of Quatremère's book in July 1807 (Soane Case 171). He also used it in the preparation of his first course of Royal Academy lectures delivered in 1809 (see Lectures (London 1929), lecture IV, pp. 60, 73). BAL Early printed books, no. 2678.

An interleaved copy with notes in ink on the interleaved pages and in the margins of the text, some cropped. With a folded sheet of 4 pages of page references in ink loosely inserted.
Copy 2: 26.2 cm. Imperfect; wanting the half-title. Bought from Thomas Boone for 4s. on 9 November 1816. (Spiers Box). Interleaved, with notes in pencil in the margins of the text.
Copy 3: 25.8 cm. Imperfect; wanting the half-title. Possibly (by elimination) the copy purchased in a lot containing four other books for £1 16s. at Christie's on 17 February 1815, lot 49. (See marked-up copy of the sale catalogue in Christie's archive).
Binding Copy 1: C19th vellum, blind double-ruled borders and spine, black morocco spine-label, marbled edges to match the endpapers. Bound by Peter Low for 7s., 1806. Interleaved vellum extra. (Spiers Box).
Copy 2: C19th half calf, thick gilt-ruled borders and spine, marbled-paper boards, red morocco spine-label. Bound by Edwin Hutchinson for 4s., August 1829. (Archives 7/10/19 bookbinding).
