Volumes II and III have imprint 'Chez Mme. veuve Agasse, Imprimeur-Libraire, ...'. Volume II has imprint date 1801--1820. Part of the Encyclopédie méthodique, a revised version of Diderot's original Encyclopédie of 1751--1780 (q.v.) rearranged by subject rather than alphabetically and issued between 1782 and 1832 by C.J. Panckoucke and his heirs after his death in 1798. The section on architecture was edited by Quatremère de Quincy and is by far the most considerable "rectification" of the omissions in the original Encyclopédie. According to an 'Avis' facing the title-page of vol. II, the second volume was printed in 2 parts: pages 1--358 in 1801, the rest in 1820 (with continuous register but missing pp. 359--360 from the pagination). Volume III was published in 1825. For an overview of the complex history of this monumental work and further references see BAL, Early printed books, no. 987 (the BAL set is incomplete and lacks the volumes on architecture).

Binding C19th half calf, marbled-paper boards, gilt double-rule spine, red spine-labels.

Reference Number 3101
