Soane's purchase of a single lot (no. 42 - 'A very fine Specimen of the Neck and Cover to a Jug ...') at this dispersal sale of Belzoni's Egyptian Hall exhibits pre-dates by almost two years his spectacular acquisition of the alabaster sarcophagus of Seti I in May 1824 (see Stanley Mayes, The Great Belzoni, 1959, p. 275).
Copy Notes With part of the description of lot 42 on p. 11 underlined in red ink and Soane inscribed in the margin. Printed front-wrapper present, inscribed in red ink Lot 42 Soane and in black by another hand JB Sale. Bound in a collection of sale catalogues, 1784--1823.
