A collection commissioned by the leading architectural print-publisher Domenico de' Rossi, including many plates by Ferrerio, Falda and Santi Bartoli (qq.v.) inherited as part of Giovanni Giacomo de' Rossi's stock; it inspired Ferdinando Ruggieri's similarly titled collection for which Ruggerio drew and engraved almost all the plates, published 1722--28 (q.v.). The second volume, dated 1721, has title: Studio d'architettvra civile sopra uarj ornamenti di cappelle, e diuersi sepolcri tratti da più chiese di Roma colle loro facciate, fianchi, piante, e misure. ... Parte seconda; the third volume, dated 1722, has title: Studio d'architettura civile sopra varie chiese, cappelle di Roma, e Palazzo di Caprarola, et altre fabriche con le loro facciate, spaccati, piante, e misure. ... Parte terza. The entire work is engraved except for two leaves of letterpress in the first part, which comprises 141 etched and engraved plates including the title-plate and dedication numbered 1--2 and the remainder numbered 4--142, leaves 3 and 143 being a letterpress address to the 'Amatori Delle Belle Arti' and an index leaf. Part III, plates 81--83 are intended to be pasted together to form a single folding plate. BAL, Early printed books, no. 3197; Berlin Kat. 2681.
Copy Notes Copy 1: Parts II and III bound together. In this copy plates 81--83 in part III have not been joined together and are bound as three plates. The first volume inscribed in pencil on front free-endpaper 3 tom in 2 2.12.6 (possibly in Thomas Boone's hand), and inscribed in ink on part I title-pl. Cost 11 Crow 2½ Ba[?]cs; pl. 23, of the portico in the cortile of the Palazzo Farnese, inscribed in ink in the margin Ces collonnes sont/ d'une belle proportion/ quoique plus haute/ que lon neles fait/ ordinairement:/ mais les Alettes/ et l'Archivolte/ paroissent Maigres, with measurements in a different hand. Part II title-plate inscribed in pencil at foot of page 5 Crows. Part III, pl. 28 (section of the nave of S. Ignatio) inscribed in ink in the margin in an unidentified hand with hight of the pedestal ... intablature ... pilasters ... Zocholos ... Vault ... its Zocholo ... total hight; pl. 66 (plan of the second floor of Caprarole), inscribed in ink with measurements and a note in French about the height of the pilasters in the 'Salone'. This plate is marked with the engraved card of 'Mr. Henry Westmacott, 25, Mount Street'.
Copy 2: 48.5 cm. Imperfect; part I, plates 4--13, 22--24 bound in part II, wanting pl. 107; part II wanting plates 2--6, 63; part III, pl. 52 bound in vol. II, wanting plates 20--22, 27--30, 46--47, 50--51. Plates 81--83 in part III have not been joined together and are bound as three plates. With measured drawings in ink of the Plan des Sts apostes and the plan of L'eglise de la paise loosely inserted at part III, pl. 16. Robert Adam's copy, inscribed in ink by Soane on front pastedown of the first volume Mr Adam's sale / May 1818 / 1:11:6. (see also Priv. Corr. XVI.E.3.12); front free-endpapers to all three volumes inscribed in pencil CL.
