The title and imprint are taken from the first plate which is captioned 'Frontespizio Delle Antichità Romane. Divise ...'. This plate is dated 1823; the other plates bear dates between 1819 and 1823. The work consists of 101 large scale Piranesian plates of Roman ruins. The plates were reprinted in 1829 with a letterpress title-leaf bearing a 'Catalogo ...' of Rossini's works on the verso, and again as part of Rossini's collected works issued in 1856 in 10 volumes. The plates in the Soane copy are in an early unnumbered state; later impressions have numbers added bottom right with the frontipiece being pl. 1. Copy Notes Bound in two volumes, the first containing 50 plates including the frontispiece and the second 51. Volume I inscribed in pencil on front free-endpaper 2 Vols. Complete/ 16..16..0 fine Impressions. Bought from Priestley and Weale for 16 guineas on 24 May 1826. (Priv. Corr. XVI.E.6.9). The plates are numbered in pencil in a curatorial hand and the sequence does not correspond to the numbering in the later state.

Binding C19th quarter green straight-grained morocco, green roan corners, gilt-ruled borders, gilt-lettered spine, marbled-paper boards, marbled endpapers and fore-edges. Bound in two volumes.
