London (Place), [c. 1730?].
pp. 347--391, [1] ; 20.0 cm. (8°)

A fragment comprising leaves Z3--8, signatures 2A--2C8 and leaf D1 only extracted from vol. III of an unidentified edition of Anthony Ashley Cooper, 3rd Earl of Shaftesbury's Characteristicks of men, manners, opinions, times, preceded by the stubs of the first two leaves of sig. Z and the divisional title-leaf to 'Treatise VII. ...' laid down on a blank leaf with the bottom half excised. The title as transcribed above is taken from this leaf and from the divisional title to the 'Letter concerning Design' (leaf 2C1r). The first edition of the Characteristicks to include Shaftesbury's 'Letter concerning Design' was the fifth edition, 1732 (ESTC t144565); the present fragment, however, appears to have the 'Judgment of Hercules' in an earlier setting, possibly the fourth edition of 1727 (ESTC t66622), with the statement 'The End of the Third Volume.' at the foot of p. 391. Shaftesbury's works were edited by Thomas Micklethwaite.

Copy Notes Bound first in a volume of 'Miscellaneous' pamphlets, retaining earlier wrappers. A note of the contents of the pamphlet volume tipped onto volume front free-endpaper.

Binding Bound in a numbered series of late 19th century half calf pamphlet volumes. (Archive, Trustees' Minutes 18 June 1866). With binder's stamp 'Bound By Mansell' on front pastedown. C18th marbled-paper wrappers bound in.
