A catalogue of the Portland Museum, lately the property of the Duchess Dowager of Portland, deceased: which will be sold by auction, by Mr. Skinner and Co. on Monday the 24th of April, 1786, and the thirty-seven following days, at twelve o'clock, Sundays, and the 5th of June, (the day His Majesty's birth-day is kept) excepted; at her dwelling-house, in Privy-Garden, Whitehall; by order of the acting executrix. Lugt 4028. Admission to the sale was by numbered catalogue (price 5s.). The frontispiece, drawn by [E.F.] Burney and engraved by [Charles] Grignion, shows a fancifully arranged interior view of the Museum with the penultimate lot, the celebrated Portland (or 'Barberini') Vase, displayed in pride of place. Within three days of its sale on 7 June for 980 guineas to 'Mr. Tomlinson' (acting for the 3rd Duke of Portland), the already famous vase had been lent to Josiah Wedgwood for work to begin on producing his almost equally famous reproduction in Jasper ware (first edition c. 1790). ESTC t28783.
Copy Notes Copy 1: Copy number 235. This is an annotated copy with buyers' names and prices inscribed in ink throughout. With a small architectural sketch in pencil on rear free-endpaper.
Copy 2: 28.8 cm. Imperfect; wanting the engraved frontispiece and all before p. [11]. With marks in pencil against a few lots. Uncut and largely unopened.
Binding Copy 1: C18th half calf, marbled-paper boards.
Copy 2: Blue paper wrappers, buff paper spine.
