[Sketches in architecture. 1793]
Sketches in architectvre containing plans and elevations of cottages villas and other vsefvl bvildings with characteristic scenery by Iohn Soane ...
London (Place), pvblished by Messrs. Taylor,, 1793.
[4], iv p., XLIII pl. ; 44.5 cm. (2°)

Middle dots omitted from title and imprint. This is Soane's third collection of designs after Designs in architecture, 1778 (q.v.) and Plans, elevations and sections of buildings, 1788 (q.v.). The elevations are portrayed in aquatint views and the plans as line-engravings. All the plates bear Taylor's imprint line dated 1 January 1793. Probably issued at the instigation of the publisher, it was sold in a bound volume (as in Soane copy 1) with a second collection of Six designs for improving and embellishing grounds by the little-known artist and aquatintist G.J. Parkyns, with separate pagination and signatures, which is occasionally found and here catalogued separately (q.v.). A general title-leaf covering the two works is known in a single copy at Harvard. Josiah Taylor issued a second edition of both works in 1798 (see Abbey, Life, 74 and ESTC n25077), which is not in the Soane Museum. Harris and Savage 843; Millard II, 77; BAL, Early printed books, no. 3099; ESTC t102002.
