Lugt 12047. 85 lots. John Udny (1727--1800) was British Consul in Livorno from 1776 until the French invasion in 1796, and an assiduous collector. He died shortly after his return to London, where two sales of paintings from his collection took place at Christie's in April 1800 and May 1802. (See Ingamells, A dictionary of British and Irish travellers in Italy 1701--1800, 1997, pp. 961--3.) His son John Robert Udny was born in Livorno in 1779.
