VIEL DE SAINT MAUX, Charles-François (1745--1819)

Viel's works show him to be 'a reactionary, somewhat eccentric theorist, certainly the most prevocative of the period' (R. Middleton and D. Watkin, Neoclassical and 19th century architecture, 1980, p. 430). The 'Avant-propos' announces 'une seconde partie, laquelle contiendra les différens monumens érigés sur mes dessins. Le plus grand nombre des planches est déjà gravé.' However Viel seems at some point to have changed his mind, as the material intended to make up volumes 2 and 3 appeared piecemeal between 1797 and 1809. The present copy forms one volume of what appears to be a pro tempore arrangement of Viel's works up to 1800, brought together by Perronneau in two volumes, on the evidence of the list of Viel's works available from the bookseller on the half-title verso of Décadence de l'architecture, 1800 (q.v.) which opens the companion volume.

Binding C19th half red roan, gilt-ruled spine, marbled-paper boards, green spine-label lettered in gilt 'Viels/ Principes/ De L'Ordonnance/ De La Construction/ Des Batimens'. Uniform bound with the companion volume (q.v.).
