[Sale catalogue. 1793:06:14--15]
A catalogue of the genuine and valuable collection of drawings and prints, a few pictures, books, &c. late the property of the ingenious Mr. John Webber, R.A. ... which will be sold by auction by Mr. Christie, at his Great Room, Pall Mall, on Friday, June 14th, 1793, and following day, ...
London (Place), 1793].
10, [2] p. ; 28.4 cm. (4°)
Lugt 5085. The final leaf is blank. Lot 79 of day 2 of the sale, marked in pencil in the Soane copy, is described as 'A large oval original cast alto rilievo, the judgment of Midas, by Mr. Henry Webber, which obtained the premium from the Royal Academy'. Henry Webber (1754--1826), John Webber's brother, won the Royal Academy gold medal for sculpture in 1776, the year in which Soane was awarded the gold medal for architecture, and until recently it seemed probable that Soane acquired the relief (SM Inv. SC23) at this sale. (See Bruce Tattersall, 'Henry Webber: art at the service of industry', Apollo, CXXIII, no.288, February 1986, pp. 36--43.) However, we now know that it was purchased in the 1830s from a firm of plaster cast makers. Two watercolour drawings by John Webber of scenes from Sterne's 'Sentimental Journey' also in the Soane Museum were purchased from Soane's friend E. Foxhall for 5 guineas in 1796; one or both of these may correspond to lot 86 on the first day of the sale, 'One [drawing] from Sterne's sentimental journey, and 4 studies, various, ...'. ESTC t181452.
Copy Notes A pencil mark against lot 79, day 2 as described above. Bound (14) in a collection of sale catalogues.
