First published in Rome, 1767 (q.v.). The present edition pre-dates the revised and enlarged 'Seconda Edizione' published in Rome by Carlo Mordacchini in 1821, and lacks the material by Stefano Raffei that was issued by Generoso Salomoni with copies sold after Winckelmann's death and later incorporated into the 1821 edition. The engraved illustrations have been given page references based on their location in the first edition, excluding those numbered V and VI in the 'Indicazione De' Rami ...' which have not been reproduced although still listed in the text, and a number of the plates in the present edition have been printed from different coppers.

Copy Notes Bought from Weale for 4 guineas in 1830. (Priv. Corr. XVI.E.7.10). Purchased from Priestley and Weale's Catalogue of books on architecture, 1831, item 690, '£4.4s.' (q.v.). In the Soane copy, which is bound in one volume, the engravings are bound with the text in vol. II.

Binding C19th calf, gilt roll-tooled borders, gilt lettered and gilt-ruled spine, black morocco spine label. Bound by Edwin Hutchinson for 16s., 6 June 1831. (Priv. Corr. XVI.E.7.16). Two volumes bound as one.
