Imprint and date taken from printed front wrapper. There were in all ten exhibitions of drawings from the collection of the late Sir Thomas Lawrence (1769--1830) offered for sale by Samuel Woodburn at his gallery in St. Martin's Lane. The Museum has catalogues of only the fourth to eighth exhibitions. In February 1831 Soane, who was "extremely anxious that this collection should remain entire, and that the sole property be invested in the President and the members of the Royal Academy", offered £1,000 for that purpose provided the collection was deposited in the Academy and not in the British Museum. (See Bolton, Portrait, pp. 473--4.)
