An undated collected issue of the plays of Thomas Otway in two volumes. Volume I includes: 'The Soldiers Fortune', 1733; 'The Atheist', 1733; 'Alcibiades', 1735; and 'The Orphan', 1749; and vol. II includes: 'Don Carlos', 1734; 'The History and Fall Of Caius Marius', 1733; 'Titus and Berenice, ... With a Farce call'd The Cheats of Scapin', 1734; 'Friendship In Fashion', 1733; and 'Venice Preserv'd', 1750. Each volume has a general title-page listing the volume contents, and each play has a separate title-page. The imprint dates may vary in different copies. All the plays have separate pagination and register. 'The Soldiers Fortune' comprises signatures P--S12 and has 'The End of the First Volume' at the foot of the final page All but 'Venice Preserv'd' are preceded by an engraved frontispiece, variously by G. King after A. Vanhaecken, J. Mynde, and Gerard Van Der Gucht. The title-page of 'Friendship in Fashion' has a portrait vignette of the author. Page 333 at the beginning of 'The Soldiers Fortune' is misnumbered '233'. ESTC t42455.
Copy Notes Bought from Edward Lumley for 3s. 6d., 27 May 1829. (Priv. Corr. XVI.E.6.26). The front pastedown of vol. I is inscribed in ink in Soane's hand 0/3/6 Lumley; also in pencil in another hand 679 / 2 vols / 3/6, and in ink 3172. The signature in ink of Anne Gorton appears on the front free-endpaper of each volume; that of Wm Gorton on the front and rear free-endpaper of each volumes and on the vol. II title-page, and again, crossed through, on the verso of the frontispiece to 'Don Carlos'. Front pastedown of vol. II has armorial bookplate of 'George Colebrooke of Southgate Middx. Esqr.'
Binding C18th sprinkled calf, gilt double-ruled borders, gilt-tooled spine compartments, red spine-labels.
