London (Place), printed for J. Walthoe; and sold by M. Cooper,, 1746.
xvii, 18--139, [5] p. ; 15.9 cm. (12º)

Anonymous. Principal authorship generally attributed to Hieronim Zahorowski. First published under title: Monita privata societatis Jesu, Notebrigae, 1612 (i.e. Cracow, 1614). See H.J. Wetzer und B. Welte's Kirchenlexikon, 2. Aufl. 1886--1901, vol. 8, col. 1776. Allegedly a code of instructions addressed to the superiors of the order and outlining various methods of advancing the influence of the Society and attacking its enemies, this is in reality a fabrication attributed to a disaffected Polish Jesuit, Hieronim Zahorowski, which achieved wide circulation and notoriety. It was first translated into English by Henry Compton (1632--1713) in 1669; the present translation was originally published in 1723. Dedication signed: John Walthoe, junr. Latin & English on opposite pages. Walthoe's advertisements appear on the verso of the half-title and the final five pages. Page xiv misnumbered xvi. ESTC t93319.

Binding C19th half calf, marbled-paper boards, gilt double-ruled spine, black morocco spine-label, date of publication in gilt at foot of spine given erroneously as '1726'. Bound by Edwin Hutchinson for 1s. 2d., 26 July 1830. (Spiers Box. Binding 51).
