Anonymous. Dedication signed 'D'Arnay' = Jean-Rodolphe d'Arnay (see Quérard, v. 1, p. 98). First edition. The work was well received and was reprinted with additions in 1757 and 1795, and translated into other languages including English, German and Italian.
Copy Notes Bought from W. Boone [Lot 59] on 13 February 1822 for 3s. (Priv.Corr. XVI.E.4.8). Pencil inscription on front free-endpaper 1.6. Occasional marginal vocabulary notes in pencil, possibly by Soane.
Binding C18th sprinkled calf, gilt-tooled spine with floral tool, red morocco spine-label.
