[Description de la ... colonne historiée. Latin. 1765]
Columna Theodosiana quam vulgo historiatam vocant ab Arcadio imperatore Constantinopoli erecta in honorem imperatoris Theodosii junioris a Gentile Bellino delineata nunc primum ære sculpta et in XVIII. tabulas distributa.
Prostant Venetiis (Place), [Apud J. Baptista Pasquali],, [1765].
[2], 7, [1] p., XVIII pl. ; 48.5 x 52.4 cm. (obl. 2º)

The Column of Theodosius which stood in Constantinople until the end of the fourteenth century was carved with reliefs depicting the victory of Theodosius, the last emperor to rule over both the eastern and western halves of the Roman empire, over the barbarians. The description of the plates is signed 'Claudii Francisci Menetreji S.J.' i.e. Claude François Menestrier (1631--1705), and is a Latin translation of his Description de la belle et grande colonne historiée dressée à l'honneur de l'Empereur Theodose, with 16 double-page plates, published in Paris by Guillaume Vallet, 1702 (Berlin Kat. 4205). The title-page lacks an imprint; some copies were apparently issued with an engraved title-plate with the imprint given above and an engraved vignette by Visentini with motto 'Litterarum Felicitas'. See G. Morazzoni, Il libro illustrato veneziano del settecento (Milan 1943), p. 242. Berlin Kat. 4204.

Copy Notes Inscribed in ink on front free-endpaper 1/0/0 / John Soane / 1805. Soane evidently refused the offer of another copy from Thomas King Jr on 8 May 1813, which was described as 'Very Scarce' and for which the 'Very lowest Price' King could take was £4. (Spiers Box Misc. Booksellers).

Binding C18th half vellum, later blue paper board covering and calf corners, spine lettered in ink 'Colvmna · Theodosiana'.

Reference Number 4202

Additional Names Bellini, Gentile (d.$1506)
