The first edition of the English translation, by Sir Roger L'Estrange, of the famous Lettres portugaises first published in French in 1669. These were formerly attributed to the nun Mariana Alcoforado (1640--1723) from Beja and were supposed to have been written to Noël Bouton, marquis de Chamilly. They are now generally attributed to Guilleragues. With a preliminary imprimatur leaf dated 'Dec. 28. 1677' and a final advertisement leaf containing the publisher's list of books printed and sold 'since the dreadful Fire of 1666, to 1678.'. ESTC r6558; Wing A889.

Binding C17th sheep, blind double-ruled borders and spine.
