Includes the preface to the 'Seventh English Edition of Montaigne's Essays' which was published under an anonymous editor in 1759. It refers to the success of the translation of Montaigne's essays by Charles Cotton first published in 1685--86 but indicates that the source of the new translation is Coste's edition which was first published in 1724. This suggests that while Cotton's version is still the basis of the translation, it has been improved by reference to the new French edition by another hand. Likewise, it would appear that the Dublin "eighth edition" of 1760 is Cotton's translation with (anonymous) improvements but the relation between this edition and the London "seventh" and "eighth" editions is not clear.
