First published 1658. Includes 'The Garden Of Cyrus' with special title-page and separate pagination, but continuous register. The frontispiece is dedicated to Sir Hans Sloane. This is one of the first archaeological monographs in English; the burial urns described, which are Saxon rather than Roman as hypothesized by Browne, are in the British Museum (see ODNB). ESTC t86002.

Copy Notes Imperfect; wanting the frontispiece. Bought at the sale of the late architect and antiquary James Cavanah Murphy (1716--1814) for 2s. on 18 December 1814 with other books and prints to the value of £27, paid by draft dated 19 December. (Spiers Box, Miscellaneous booksellers). Inscribed in ink on title-page with the price 2/- and John Soane [junior]. Front pastedown with earlier price in pencil -1s-. Rear pastedown with earlier cyphers and a 3-line Latin inscription in ink, possibly Samuel Johnni [or Johnson] dramaticis est nemo [?] / Johannis Rola[nd--?] Exquire/ Sculpt Aut fecit. Extensive pencil annotations with page references on front and rear pastedowns, various marks of emphasis in pencil and ink in more than one hand in the text. Loose at pp. 38--39 at end a folded leaf inscribed with further notes and references for Part 2 in pencil and ink, including a pencil sketch of a face in profile. Upper cover inscribed with a calculation in ink.

Binding C18th quarter calf, marbled-paper boards, gilt-ruled spine, red leather spine-label.
