Edited by Lavinia Forster. Forster was '...an active supporter of the Royal Institution from its commencement; was appointed honorary librarian ... and was engaged to deliver lectures there, during three following seasons ...' - preface. His translation of the Arabian Nights from the French of Antoine Galland was published in 1802 with illustrations by Robert Smirke (q.v.). Includes a list of subscribers; Soane is down for 10 copies (Sir Thomas Lawrence, P.R.A., for fifty).
Copy Notes A note in Soane's archive dated Russell Square 4 Novr. 1828 and signed Philip Hardwick records his receipt for Mrs. Forster by the hands / of Sir Tho Lawrence of Soane's draft for Ten Guineas being his Subscription for / two Copies. (Priv. Corr. XIV.F.71). This was followed by an ALs from Lavinia Forster dated Paris Novr. 25 / 1828 thanking Soane for the liberal subscription you have honour'd me with, for / my late husband's Sermons. (Priv. Corr. XIV.F.72).
Copy 1: Mostly unopened after p. 57 of vol. I.
Copy 2: Imperfect; wanting the frontispiece portrait of the author.
Binding Copy 1: Publisher's grey paper boards, decorative borders, title printed on upper covers as title-page omitting mention of the account of his life; decorative printed spines with title 'Forster's / Sermons / Vol. I. (II.) / Paris, 1828'.
Copy 2: Publisher's buff paper boards, printed as copy 1.
