Prospectus for publishing by subscription, views illustrative of the scenery and antiquities of Northern Africa; in the regions of Nubia, and the country above the Cataracts of the Nile; of upper and lower Egypt, the Cyrenaic Pentapolis, and the shores of the greater Syrtis. Drop-head title. Quarter sheet folded. Undated. Text reads 'The first number will be published early in May' corrected in ink to early in November. Subscribers' names were to be received by James Carpenter and Son, Old Bond Street. In 1817 Beechey (the son of Sir William Beechey) was sent by Henry Salt, British consul-general in Egypt, to oversee the excavations of Giovanni Belzoni at Thebes and to make drawings of the monuments, including the interior of the newly discovered tomb of Seti I, whose sarcophagus was later acquired by Soane. In 1821--2 Beechey accompanied his brother Frederick William Beechey, R.N. (1796--1856) on a survey of part of the coastline of North Africa. The account of that expedition was published as Proceedings of the expedition to explore the northern coast of Africa, from Tripoly eastward, London: John Murray, 1828; no copies of the work advertised in the present prospectus have been traced.
