The sixth series. Imprint from plate publication lines; T. Bensley's imprint is on the verso of the letterpress title-page. Daniell's Oriental scenery was published in six parts or series containing a total of 144 coloured aquatint plates and 6 uncoloured acquatint title-plates, beginning with the first series issued between March 1795 and January 1797 (q.v.). An octavo pamphlet of text describing the plates was issued with each part. This was actually the fifth series issued in chronological terms, but became the sixth in the final arrangement of the work. A second planned series on cave temples was never completed and those plates that had been prepared for it were never included in the series sold as sets from 1808 onwards. The descriptive letterpress also calls for eight plans of temples lettered A--H; these were also omitted from sets of the series but a copy in the original printed wrappers survives in Soane's library (q.v.). BAL, Early printed books, no. 804; Abbey, Travel, 420, 'Part 5' (pp. 375--6); Archer, Early views, pl. 149--172.
