PIRANESI, Giovanni Battista ( 1720--1778)
[Vedute di Roma. 1753-4]
Vedvte di Roma disegnate ed incise da Giambattista Piranesi architetto Ve[ne]ziano
[Roma]:, [Giovanni Bouchard],, [1753 or 4].
Etch. double-page t.-pl., etch. double-page frontis., [34] double-page etch. pl.; 52 cm. (1°)

The title is taken from the etched title-plate. Part of a complete set of Piranesi's works issued in 1753 or 4 under the collective title of Le magnificenze di Roma (q.v.), these 36 Vedute di Roma plates represent the published series at that date. Begun in 1747 or 8 as an open-ended accumulation of prints (that were also subsequently available individually), the Vedute were added to throughout Piranesi's working life. All are first published states before the addition of Bouchard & Gravier's imprint line, corresponding to Hind's state I (except in the case of Hind nos. 16 and 58 which are present in Hind's second state). For Andrew Robison's radical but convincing revision of Hind's ordering of the early Vedute see his essay 'Dating Piranesi's Early Vedute di Roma' in Alessandro Bettagno et al., Piranesi tra Venezia e l'Europa (exh. cat., Firenze 1983). For a concordance of Robison's new sequence with Hind and Wilton-Ely numbers see Rome recorded: a complete edition of G.B. Piranesi's Vedute di Roma from the collection of The Arthur Ross Foundation (exh. cat., American Academy in Rome, 1989; revised ed., 1990), p. 132. The plates in question are Hind 1--5, 7--9, 14--19, 28, 29, 32--35, 37, 38, 40, 41, 43, 45, 46, 49--54, 56, 58 and 59.
