Description of the picture by Nichola del Abbatti, at Mr. Harris's, No. 168, New Bond-street. The subject is Orpheus and Eurydice, ... Proposed to be disposed of by the drawing of the next lottery. ...
London (Place), [1814].
[4] p. ; 22.8 cm. (4°)

Folded half-sheet, first verso and conjugate leaf blank. Drop-head title. Dated from accompanying letters. Participation in the lottery was to be by thirty-two subscribers at fifty pounds each. Farington refers to Troward's previous sales of pictures (VIII/3000, XI/3942) and the fact that at his death in 1815 he left his family in poor straits (XIII/4749). The painting is now at the National Gallery under the title The Death of Eurydice (NG 5283) acquired through the National Art Collections Fund from the Talbot Collection (Margam House sale) in 1941.

Copy Notes Copy 1: Wanting the conjugate blank leaf. Accompanied by an ALs from Rd. Troward, dated Albemarle St. / 5th July, indicating that want of the money (I say it to yourself / only and in confidence) obliges me to / part with it. Mr. West is says this is one of the very finest pictures from / the continent ... / The picture cost me / 1600£ & was thot. very / cheap.
Copy 2: Conjugate blank leaf with undated MS. (copy) of a letter from Benjamin West recommending the picture as a work of art [in] the class of the Italian masters of high / celebrity. As indicated in a further ALs dated Albemarle St. / 22d July 1814 this copy was evidently sent when the letter of a short / time ago had failed to draw a reply; further citing the commendations of Mr. West & Mr. Cosway, Troward the second letter notes that 14 of the 32 chances are disposd / of & 4 others, partly promisd ....

Binding Folded papers; both copies and associated correspondence attached by C20th tape.
