A Paris (Place), pour ledit Jacques Androuet, du Cerceau,, 1579.
7 leaves, 61 pl. (=72 coppers) ; 42.5 cm. (2°)

First edition. The companion volume, Le premier volume ..., first appeared in 1576 and both volumes were issued in a second edition in 1607. Soane's set is made up of the second edition of Le premier volume (q.v.) and the first edition of Le second volume. (Another mixed set, made up of the first edition of volume I and the second edition of volume II, is described in BAL Early printed books, nos. 100 & 101.) The plates in this volume consist of double-page engravings with the exception of plates 38, 52 and 54, which are printed on single-page leaves. Nine plates each bear the impressions of two distinct coppers (pl. 44 bears three such impressions).

Copy Notes Soane's set was purchased on his behalf by J. Williams for £3 13s. at the sale of John Nash's library, 15--20 July 1835 (q.v.), lot 160. (Spiers Box, Purchases through personal friends). Both volumes have the armorial bookplate of Isaac Ware pasted down on the verso of the title-page. This volume additionally has a pen-and-ink part elevation of the exterior of a building by an unidentified 16th-century French architect laid down on the second front free-endpaper (see Soane Museum, Concise Catalogue of Drawings: Volumes, French School, 3). Ian Campbell has suggested a potential Cassiano dal Pozzo provenance for this copy (personal communication, 2003).

Binding C17th vellum, gilt double-rule borders, gilt-tooled strapwork cartouche centrepiece and fleur-de-lis corners on upper and lower covers, gilt double-rule spine with gilt-tooled rose motif. Traces of two pairs of ties.
