[Eight illustrations of the Lord's prayer, from the designs of J. Flaxman, R.A. drawn on stone, by R. Lane, A.R.A., and now first published.]
London (Place), published ... by Charles Knight,, 1835.
[2] p., [8] litho. pl. ; 25.8 cm.

A series of eight lithographs by Richard Lane, published after Flaxman's death and apparently intended by him for publication based on the finished state of the original drawings now in the art collections of University College London. See David Bindman (ed.), John Flaxman 1755--1826: master of the purest line, exh. cat., Soane Museum (London 2003), p. 57, cat. no. 51. The Soane set consists of proof impressions of the plates cropped and laid down in an album, with a MS. label on the first leaf reading The / Lords Prayer / From Drawings / By / Flaxman within a border of starburst rays, and lacks the letterpress title-leaf found in published copies, from which the title above is taken. A similar presentation album is held by the Houghton Library at Harvard University (shelfmark Houghton Accessions *77-1353).

Copy Notes Without the letterpress title included in the above collation. The first leaf with an inscription in ink To Sir John Soane &c. &c. &c. / As a Testimony of respect and esteem / from M. Denman / Septr. 11th. 1835. Maria Denman was Flaxman's sister-in-law, from whom Soane acquired numerous items for his own collection after the sculptor's death in 1826 including this presentation album. Soane was in almost constant touch with Maria Denman from July 1833 until the time of his death, substantially rearranging his Museum to integrate a large collection of works by Flaxman. See Helen Dorey, 'Flaxman and Soane' in Bindman (ed.), op. cit., pp. 25--35.

Binding C19th half maroon morocco, gilt-ruled borders, moiré gilt publisher's cloth boards, gilt-tooled spine.

Reference Number 6568

Additional Names Denman, Maria; Lane, Richard; Lord's Prayer
