'L'Historien des Hommes' is Jean-Baptiste-Claude Delisle des Sales. Includes a frontispiece portrait of the author engraved by P.F. Duflos after Antoine Borel and two chronological tables. Volume XIII contains directions for placing the seventy-three plates in the text or as a separate atlas volume, and descriptions of the plates.

Copy Notes Imperfect; wanting the third table of 'Monarchies de la Grèce' in vol. XIII, and all of the general plates of ancient monuments which have been torn out, except for the plate of the 'Péridrome' in volume VIII. The tables of 'mesures itinéraires' and 'Chronique du Paros', and the map of the 'monde primitif' called for in vol. XIII are misbound in volumes I, II, and III respectively. Volume I is inscribed in ink by Soane on the second free-endpaper 13 vol: 3:18:0 // John Soane, and in a different hand on the first free-endpaper in pencil 13 toms, with a price £[erasure]. Bought at the sale of the late architect and antiquary James Cavanah Murphy (1716--1814) for £3 18s. on 18 December 1814 with other books and prints to the value of £27, paid by draft dated 19 December. (Spiers Box, Miscellaneous booksellers).

Binding C18th mottled sheep, blind-ruled borders, gilt double-ruled spines, red and dark green morocco spine-labels, marbled endpapers.
