First published in 1762. Hume's History of Great Britain ... Containing the reigns of James I and Charles I had appeared in 1754 and was followed by The history of England, under the house of Tudor in 1759 and The history of England from the invasion of Julius Caesar to the accession of Henry VII, first published in London in 1762 (actually late 1761). All were subsequently incorporated into this more comprehensive work first published in 1762, which went through many editions as well as continuations by Smollett, and Thomas Lloyd and others, and was translated into French and German. The wood-engraved plates in the text include letterpress captions. The hand-coloured engraved table is a chart by William Playfair of the revolutions, colonies and conquests of the British Empire to 1804. The final volume comprises notes, chronological tables and index.
