The Italian original was first published in Florence, 1786. English translation followed by Italian text, entitled Riforma della legislazione criminale toscana del dì 30 novembre 1786, signed 'Pietro Leopoldo. V. Alberti. Carlo Bonsi.' and based closely on Cesare Beccaria's proposed reforms and abolishing capital punishment. Translated and edited by John Howard, the philanthropist and penal reformer. Peter Leopold (Leopold I, Grand Duke of Tuscany), was afterwards Leopold II, Holy Roman Emperor. ESTC t74635; Goldsmiths' 13985; Baumgartner 38.
Binding C19th half calf, marbled-paper boards, gilt-ruled spine, maroon morocco spine-label. Bound by Edwin Hutchinson for 2s. 3d., 5 September 1829. (Archives 7/10/19).
