The first edition of vol. I was published separately in 1782 as Poems; the first edition of vol. II was published separately in 1785 as The task. The publication of 'The Task' established Cowper's reputation as the foremost poet of the day. In vol. I, p. 215 misnumbered 125; in vol. II, pp. 133 and 170 misnumbered 333 and 70 respectively. With Johnson's advertisement of Cowper's edition of Homer at the end of vol. II. ESTC t133954.
Copy Notes Inscribed in ink on first free-endpaper of volume I John Soane / 1809. Bought from Thomas Boone for 7s. on 8 July 1807. (Spiers Box). With Boone's price and code in pencil on front pastedown of vol. I. Another copy in two volumes was also bought for 10s. on 5 November 1816, but is not now in Soane's library. (Jnl 6, p. 211).
Binding C18th sprinkled calf, gilt triple-ruled spines, black morocco spine-labels.
