The French traveller and natural scientist Thévenot travelled in the Levant and Egypt in 1655--1659. After returning to France where he arranged for publication of the first part of his travels, in 1663 he set off for a second voyage to the Middle East, Persia and India, for a time in the company of the merchant and travel writer Jean-Baptiste Tavernier (q.v.). He died in Iran after an accidental pistol-wound in 1667. Thévenot's Relation d'un voyage fait au Levant first appeared in Paris, 1664--1684, with the second and third parts of his travels being published posthumously from his journals.
