The works of that late most excellent philosopher and astronomer, Sir George Wharton Bar. Collected into one entire volume. By John Gadbury, ...
London (Place), printed by H[enry]. H[ills]. for John Leigh, and Awnsham Churchill,, 1683.
[32], 670, [2] p., engr. frontis. port., [1] pl. ; wdcut. illus.; 17.1 cm. (8º)

The printer 'H.H.' is Henry Hills (see Wing). A variant omits the name of Awnsham Churchill from the imprint. Wharton was most famous as a mathematician and almanac calculator but his avocation was the astrological possibilities of astronomy. As a royalist interpreter of celestial phenomena he was embroiled in acrimonious and vituperative exchanges with his rivals but was befriended by Elias Ashmole, and though imprisoned by Parliament in 1650, obtained his release through the offices of William Lilly. Contains twenty-one works, five of them with separate title-pages giving the date of original publication: 'An Astrological Judgment Upon His Majesties Present March" (p. [209]); 'Bellum Hybernicale: Or, Ireland’s War Astrologically demonstrated ...' (p. [223]); 'Merlini Anglici Errata: Or, The Errors, Mistakes, and Mis-applications of Mr. Lilly’s New Ephemeris ...' (p. [273]); 'Gesta Britannorum: Or, A Succinct Chronology Of The Action and Exploits, Battails, Sieges, Conflicts, and other Signal and Remarkable Passages, ...' (p. [417]); and 'Cheiromantia: Or, The Art Of Divining By The Lines and Signatures Engraven in the Hand of Man, By the Hand of Nature, ...' (p. [515]). 'Cheiromantia' is by Johann Rothmann. With a woodcut plate between pp. 514 and [515]; this shows a hand with letterpress instruction 'Place this Hand before the Title of 'Chiromancy'. Final leaf (Vv8) contains errata. ESTC r22229.
