Forms no. XXIV of Murray's (later Tegg's) 'Family Library'. Title-page landscape vignette. Includes bibliographical references. The frontispiece portrait of Newton is after Godfrey Kneller. The first authoritative popular biography of Newton, published by Brewster to refute charges of insanity and immorality in the biographies of Biot and Baily. Brewster subsequently published Memoirs of the life, writings, and discoveries of Sir Isaac Newton in 1855, which remained the classic life of Newton for almost a hundred years.
